Basilica is a special designation by the Pope to certain churches because of their antiquity, dignity, historical importanceor significance as a place to worship. There are 56 Basilicas in the US. To qualify as a Basilica 3 criteria must be met:
1. Long history with people in the area 2. Afford the possibility of more than one liturgy being celebrated simultaneously 3. All rites executed in an exemplary way with fidelity to liturgical norms.
